Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Three Associates of Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty were ranked in the Top 100 Sales Volume leaders in South Carolina, according to data released by RealTrends this week.

Joan Herlong, the agency’s CEO and founder, was ranked 10th; Lisa Vogel, an associate in the Clemson/Lakes office was 29h, and Grace Herlong Loveless, an associate in the Greenville, was 62th, according to RealTrends, which  identifies the country’s most successful residential real estate brokerages, teams and agents each year. The RealTrends team compiles and verifies transaction sides and closed sales volume for the industry’s trusted annual rankings program.

Herlong was the top ranked Sotheby’s International Realty agent listed in South Carolina.  She has been selling real estate full time since 1993, and led all agents in the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors in sales volume between January 2012 and December 2021 with $388 million worth of real estate transactions.  She opened her own boutique agency in 2011. Herlong affiliated with Sotheby’s International Realty and launched Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty in 2017, and the company has more than tripled in size since that time. Her book, As Is: an Insider’s Guide to Real Estate, was published by Forbes in 2024.

Born in Greenville, Loveless joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty in 2017 after a career in luxury automobiles. In her first year, she sold more than $9 million and was named the company’s Rookie of the Year. She became a member of the President’s Circle, which is for Associates who did more than $5 million in sales, and the Chairman’s Circle, which is for Associates who did more than $10 million in sales, in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Before Vogel joined Joan Herlong & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty, she was in the top 5% of agents at different brokerages and a member of the firm’s President’s Circle Society. Prior to that, she was the Broker-in-Charge for one of the largest North Carolina real estate companies. In 2022, Vogel had the largest sale for anyone in the Clemson/Lakes office. In 2023, she was named to the Chairman’s Circle and was the top producer in the Clemson/Lakes office.

“Real estate is more than listing and selling a house at our company,” said Jackson Herlong, the company’s Chief Strategy Officer and the non-compete Broker-in-charge for the Clemson/Lakes office. “We are here to help guide people on some of the biggest decisions of their lives.”

Ballentine Capital Advisors

Anthony Colancecco, COO of Ballentine Capital Advisors was quoted by Financial Advisor IQ, in their recent article about whether custodial referral programs are organic growth or not. Read the full article below.

Custodial Referral Programs: Organic Growth or Not?
Custodial referral programs provide RIAs a pipeline of client leads, but some advisors say that business generated from these programs falls outside the realm of organic growth, given their revenue-sharing arrangements.

For many financial advisors, the concept of organic growth conjures images of cold-calling prospects or leveraging relationships with centers of influence. Another common book-building strategy, custodial referral programs, would also seem to fall within the realm of organic growth — or does it?

Custodial referral programs provide eligible registered investment advisors a pipeline of leads that can help generate new clients. Fidelity’s Wealth Advisor Solutions program, one of the industry’s most popular custodial referral programs, has more than 70 participants, including Creative Planning, Mercer Global Advisors and Mariner Wealth Advisors.

Charles Schwab’s Schwab Advisor Network, another prominent custodial referral program, also offers RIAs an alternative channel for client referrals. A Schwab spokesperson did not respond to FA-IQ’s inquiry regarding the number of participants in the program.
Do you consider custodian referrals to be organic growth?
Custodial referral programs provide RIAs a pipeline of client leads, but some advisors say that business generated from these programs falls outside the realm of organic growth, given their revenue-sharing arrangements.

Referrals from these programs often surface a “pretty substantial potential client that has fairly complicated needs,” said Steve Sanduski, founder of Wisconsin-based consultancy Belay Advisors. He adds that the client relationships derived from these pipelines can be enduring.

Enrollment in custodial referral programs can also serve as an attractive quality for firms looking to sell their business down the line, said Emily Blue, co-founder and managing partner of Hue Partners.
“Typically, it is something that is highlighted … because of the work that it took to not only get into the program, but to maintain the program and to have success,” said Blue.

However, while the benefits of custodial referral programs are apparent, opinions remain mixed as to the type of growth they provide. Some advisors argue that custodial referral programs constitute a form of natural growth.
“They have all the attributes that you find in organic growth,” said Cerity Partners Chief Revenue Officer Adam Hills. “Custodial referral programs provide new clients, new asset opportunities and new revenue to our practices.”
Cerity Partners is a participant in Fidelity’s Wealth Advisor Solutions program and the Schwab Advisor Network.

Meanwhile, others argue that business derived from custodial referral programs is incomparable to organic growth methods such as traditional referrals and marketing.
“[Organic growth is] any referral or business development pipeline that is created within the walls of the firm,” said Odaro Aisueni, associate wealth manager at Houston-based Willis Johnson & Associates. “I would consider it inorganic because it’s not generated from within the walls of the firm. It’s not actually natural.”

FA-IQ asked 11 RIAs how they categorize business derived from custodial referral programs.

YMCA Camp Greenville Dedicates Brand-New Cabin To Former YMCA Executive Director, Charlie Johnson, Allowing For Additional Campers

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 5, 2024) – The YMCA of Greenville today honored the legacy of the late Charlie Johnson for his impact and service as the Greater Greenville YMCA Executive Director from 1967 to 1978.

Family, staff and community members gathered at YMCA Camp Greenville in Cleveland, SC for the unveiling of the new cabin, which will enable Camp Greenville to serve an additional 96 campers each summer. Camp Greenville currently has a waitlist of more than 800 children. Two identical cabins are slated to be built on each side of the Charlie Johnson cabin and are currently seeking funding.

The Charlie Johnson cabin was generously funded by the Stephen D. Mitchell Foundation, in memory of their uncle. The cabin will house 12 campers each week for the eight weeks of camp and is situated in the location of the original Camp Greenville cabins, built in 1925.

As Executive Director of the Greater Greenville YMCA, Johnson’s leadership and devotion to the mission of the YMCA resulted in many “firsts” in bringing vital programs to the Metro YMCA, many of which continue to this day.

A few of Johnson’s accomplishments in his tenure include :

• Broadening the geographic area to include all of Greenville County, resulting in additional YMCA branches
• Organizing the first YMCA childcare program in the 1970s
• Implementing youth soccer at the YMCA
• Creating the YMCA Endowment Corporation for the Greater Greenville YMCA, which was chartered in 1976.

The Greenville Jewish Film Festival

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Jewish Film Festival’s SummerFest 2024 promises a captivating blend of cultures with the spotlight on a Mumbai street dancer’s journey under the guidance of an Israeli ballet master.

Call Me Dancer is a 2023 documentary by director and producer Leslie Shampaine. It is a story of perseverance, passion, culture and an unlikely friendship. The documentary follows Manish Chauhan, a street dancer from Mumbai, whose working-class parents depend on their only son’s financial support.

The ambitious Manish becomes determined to make it as a professional dancer, but the odds are stacked against him. Together, Manish and Yehuda transform each other’s lives, searching to uncover who and what they are. Yehuda seeks purpose and a place to call home. Manish dreams of dancing on the world stage but struggles to break free from the confines of his economic and social circumstances.

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County

GREENVILLE, S.C. –   After almost 16 years helping to transform affordable homeownership in our community, Monroe Free will be retiring as President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County this December.

His replacement will be LaTonya Phillips, a seasoned professional with more than 20 years of experience in leadership, training and development, team management, healthcare, and philanthropy.

“Habitat Greenville has impacted thousands of lives over the years,” Free said. “I am honored to have played but a small part in it.”

Free joined Habitat Greenville in 2009 after serving for more than 20 years in non-profit leadership roles in his native Tennessee. Under his leadership, Habitat Greenville has been honored numerous times for its service to the community earning awards from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the SC Association of Nonprofit Organizations; expanded into Laurens County; started a Black Home Ownership program in 2023; added a second ReStore; began a robust home repair program; and celebrated its  300th and 400th homes built.

“We have accomplished so much with the support of our many great sponsors and volunteers,” Free said. “But there is much work left to be done and accomplished.”

Leading that work will be Phillips, who most recently held the position of Global Leader of the DEI Gender Employee Resource Task Group and was the Healthcare IT Customer Trainer at AGFA Healthcare. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an ability to create positive change through both professional and volunteer work. She is skilled at building strong relationships with customers and colleagues, fostering collaborative teams and has a proven track record of success in implementing strategic initiatives.

Phillips is also active in the community. She currently serves on the board of several organizations aside from Habitat Greenville including United Ministries and Greenville Women Giving. She has also served with the Interfaith Hospitality Network, Girlfriends Inc., and Jack and Jill.

She holds a Master’s in Human Resource Development from Clemson University, a Bachelor’s in Occupational Training and Development from the University of Louisville, and an Associate’s in Healthcare from the University of Louisville.

For the past  three years, she has served on the Habitat Greenville Board’s executive committee and has been the board chair for the past year.. She will spend the next six months working alongside Free during the transition.

“I am beyond humbled to be getting this opportunity,” Phillips said. “Monroe has created an amazing legacy and organization. While I have been involved from a Board perspective, I look forward to immersing myself and learning more in this new capacity from our staff,  volunteers,  donors and the families we serve.”

Richard Hagins with US&S will become the new board chairperson.

“As the leader of Habitat Greenville, Monroe changed how our community looks at affordable homeownership,” Hagins said. “His leadership has helped make understanding and addressing affordable homeownership a priority for many people.”

Habitat Greenville’s board began looking for a new CEO 18 months ago and hired a consultant to assist with the process. Free said when Phillips once told him  she wanted to one day lead a non-profit organization, he wanted it to be Habitat Greenville and shared with the transition/search committee his belief that Phillips needed to be considered for Habitat’s future leadership.

“Her passion for affordable housing coupled with her leadership skills and professional experience made her an ideal candidate,” Free said

Phillips said she was humbled when Free and the search committee asked her about assuming the role.

“I look forward to continuing to build upon the successes of this organization alongside our clients, staff, volunteers and donors,” said Phillips. “I have loved serving with Habitat for the past few years, and this is the ideal next step for bringing my passion for affordable housing together with my professional background. I am honored to carry forward Monroe’s legacy of servant leadership.”
