Ken Burns Exhibition Making Its Only Southeastern Stop at Upcountry History Museum

Greenville, S.C. – Yes, that Ken Burns! America’s renowned filmmaker and documentarian reveals a more personal side of his storytelling talents in “Uncovered: The Ken Burns Collection,” the newest exhibition opening Saturday, October 9, 2021, at the Upcountry History Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, in its only stop in the Southeast and at only the second museum in the United States to host this incredible once-in-a-lifetime display.

Featuring 26 hand-sewn historic quilts dating from 1850-1940 within Burns’ personal collection, this exhibition presents a poignant picture of America. With an intimacy of distinctive precision, design, color, shape, and appliqué, each quilt embodies the beauty – and mystery – of this treasured art form. From an 1890 Triple Irish Chain quilt that was a wedding gift from mother to son to an inspiring 1918 Red Cross quilt sewn to raise money during World War I to the rare 1933 National Recovery Administration quilt with the initials FDR, these textiles represent remarkable examples of early Americana while reflecting Burns’ love of history, America and her people, as well as his personal affection for the stories quilts convey.

Together with his anecdotal thoughts about collecting and quilts, “Uncovered” is a unique presentation of visual history that illustrates not only the art of quilting, but its authenticity in the common sharing of our heritage as a way to have civil discourse, an important element Burns believes quilts and films can accomplish as both are pure examples of the collective expressions of individuals, geography, and culture.

In a video documenting the “Uncovered” exhibition, Burns said, “I have pursued as a hobby collecting what I believe is the cleanest, simplest, most authentic expression of who we are as a people…There’s nothing more directly linked to who we are than the fabric we make.”

On display through January 30, 2022, this exhibition was organized by the International Quilt Museum, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 864-467-3100 or visit www.upcountryhistory.org.

SVN | Blackstream announces first specialized retail team in the Upstate

SVN | Blackstream is pleased to reveal their new commercial retail division – the first of its kind in Greenville. As Greenville and surrounding areas have expanded, so has the demand for retail property. SVN | Blackstream recognizes this need and have since formed a dedicated duo to serve as specialized retail advisors.

Dustin Tenney and Daniel Holloway felt there was a void in the market for a team that is hyper-focused on retail brokerage. They firmly believe that the best commercial advisors are those who specialize in an asset class rather than generalize across multiple sectors. As a top producing team along with their special knack for retail, the official Reedy River Retail at SVN | Blackstream was formed. The Reedy River Retail team specializes in retail investment sales, landlord representation and tenant representation.

Tenney and Holloway have played an integral role in several notable retail developments in the last few years. They oversaw the redevelopment and leasing of The Junction at Downtown Airport, as well as the historic redevelopment of Burdette Central in Simpsonville. Their most recent project is Hammett Street Market, a 30,000 square foot food hall which is planned to connect to the Swamp Rabbit Trail. They also work with noteworthy tenants such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Tipsy Taco, and Brixx Wood Fired Pizza.

SVN | Blackstream is one of the fastest growing commercial real estate firms in the Upstate. Having excelled in the local commercial sector, Blackstream affiliated with SVN in 2014 joining an exclusive global network. SVN | Blackstream now operates franchises in Greenville, Columbia, Charlotte and Charleston with over 50 Advisors. They provide commercial real estate services to local and regional property owners, investors, and national investment funds.

Greenwood is expecting the largest housing development it has seen in the past decade

Greenwood, SC – An estimated 188 homes will be built in Greenwood, SC to accommodate the growing number of jobs in the area. The 77-acre property off of Cokesbury Road was recently closed by SVN | Blackstream advisor Loudon Brooks. The developer Mark III Properties plans to add housing developments with the builder DR Horton and start construction within the coming year. The well-known developer and builder are dedicated to bringing quality housing to Greenwood, and are expecting to build homes priced at over $300k each within the housing development.

Physicians for Act 432 announces a Patients’ Bill of Rights for the Upstate

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Citing a need for more transparency, accountability and opportunities in health care across the region, the leadership of Physicians for Act 432 — An Alliance for Fair Health Care unveiled a Patients’ Bill of Rights today.
In 1973, leaders at the American Hospitals Associations created the first Patient Bill of Rights. This forward-thinking document became the groundwork for numerous other Patient Bills of Rights created and adopted over almost the last half century, said Dr. Bruce Snyder, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Physicians for Act 432.
The seven points of this Bill of Rights are as follows:
Give doctors and patients the ability to follow the spirit of Act 432, which essentially created the mandate for stronger healthcare in the greater Greenville area.
Those include the primacy of the patient-doctor relationship and the autonomy of a doctor’s decision making process; provide the highest quality of medical care possible; create access to care for all; educate the medical workforce; and provide financial accountability/responsibility.
Enhance the ability of The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) over three of its oversight areas: management of hospitals and facilities; management of the wellbeing and autonomy of the patient-doctor relationship; and academic enhancement.
Foster the growth of those areas by encouraging more partnerships between the GHA, doctors and patients.
Create dialogue that can be the beacon for other communities to follow when it comes to strengthening and developing a better community healthcare model.
The Greenville area needs people from all sides of the healthcare continuum to come together to make this a reality.
Greenville area residents need healthcare that is able to grow with the needs of the community.
Physicians for Act 432 was started earlier this year to create a stronger healthcare environment by empowering and engaging medical professionals and their patients both inside and outside of the corporate healthcare world, said Dr. Jeff Harris, President of the Group.
The group’s name comes from the 1947 legislation that codified public healthcare needs for Greenville County residents. One of the group’s goals is to get health care to live up to the goals of that law.
“By working together, physicians, patients and community leaders can hold trustees and health systems accountable for fulfilling their obligations to our communities – and not just in the Upstate,” Harris said. “Ours is a message relevant everywhere. This is about what is best for the health of the residents of Greenville, the Upstate and all of South Carolina.”

About Physicians for Act 432:
Physicians for Act 432 – An Alliance for Fair Health Care is non-profit, cross-section of health care providers and community leaders seeking to empowering change to provide the care our communities deserve. To learn more, go to www.physiciansforact432.com.
