‘War Dogs’ Exhibit at Upcountry History Museum Showcases Bravery, Service of Military Working Dogs

“War Dogs: Never Above You, Never Below You, Always Beside You” delivers a powerful display of the heroism, service, and history of America’s military working dogs in the newest exhibition opening Saturday, October 30, 2021, at the Upcountry History Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, and running through Sunday, February 27, 2022.

Since the American Revolution, military working dogs have served all branches of the United States Armed Forces. This unique exhibition not only highlights the significant involvement of these four-legged warriors in the military but honors the important role they and their handlers play in serving and protecting countless lives in conflicts across the globe.

Featuring life-sized, hand-carved wooden sculptures designed and created by Ohio Master Craftsman James Mellick, “War Dogs” offers a poignant look at stories of perseverance, bravery, and sacrifice through eight Wounded Warrior and two Canine War Dog sculptures. These distinctively creative tributes provide a vivid visual that captures the emotional dynamics of the incredible tandem of human and canine warriors in service – and sacrifice – of their country, as is conveyed in the story of Lucca, a Marine Corps war dog. She conducted more than 400 missions during two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. On one mission, however, Lucca lost her leg and suffered severe burns, but there were never any human casualties under her watch.

“I am moved by the physical and emotional sacrifice by the men and women of the United States military,” said Mellick. “I want to pay tribute to the soldiers who served with great sacrifice by creating the sculptural allegory of wounded warrior dogs who were the soldier’s best friend and companion in battle.”

In addition, the exhibition showcases a collection of objects and combat art on loan from the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the United States Navy, and the United States Coast Guard, as well as from private collections, all of which help round out a more complete presentation of these dogs and their handlers at work around the globe from World War II, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 864-467-3100 or visit www.upcountryhistory.org.

Greenville Triumph, Premier Labs & JDRF to host Family Night

Premier Medical Laboratory Services (PMLS), Greenville Triumph SC and JDRF of South Carolina will hold a Family Night at Bob Jones University on Thursday, October 14. There will be beginner and advanced soccer clinics for the children led by professional Greenville Triumph soccer players, interactive vendor spaces to provide ways to manage stress and educate on diabetes, as well as other exciting activities for kids. Food will be provided by Chick-fil-A, and those who attend will receive a free ticket to the October 16 Greenville Triumph soccer match.
“We are excited to partner with such great organizations for a fun community event that will raise awareness for Type 1 diabetes,” said Kevin Murdock, CEO and Founder of PMLS. “In all that we do at Premier, our mission is to improve patient lives. We are continually conducting research to provide the most advanced medical tests to help with the management of T1D and we actively support JDRF’s pursuit to find better treatments and, one day, a cure.”
New research suggests, doctors often miss signs of Type 1 Diabetes — thirst, excessive urination, fatigue, weight loss — in kids. Between 5% and 10% of cases of diabetes are type 1, which is not caused by lifestyle choices and often first surfaces in childhood. PMLS, Greenville Triumph, and JDRF want to use this event to educate parents on early signs, how to control Type 1 Diabetes, and to bring the community together for an exciting family event.
Those who would like to attend Family Night can RSVP through the link below. This will be held at BJU’s Alumni Stadium on Thursday, October 14 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The soccer clinics start at 6:30 pm for two age groups: 6-8 and 9+. There will also be activities for younger kids to take part in. Masks are recommended.

BASF seeking apprentices for “earn and learn” program in White Stone

WHITE STONE, SC, October 5, 2021 – BASF is seeking applicants for a new apprenticeship program at its White Stone, South Carolina facility. The program is part of the company’s North American Apprenticeship Development Program (NAADP), which aims to meet future talent needs for a skilled and diverse technician workforce with an emphasis on attracting more females to these roles. With other programs offered at the company’s Seneca and Converse sites, this is the third apprenticeship program BASF has launched in South Carolina.

The twelve-month apprenticeship program at the White Stone site pays apprentices a full-time wage to participate in on-the-job training while earning a certificate in Process Control Technology from Spartanburg Community College. Pay begins at $19.45 per hour and increases to $22 per hour by the end of the year-long program. In addition to paying a competitive wage, BASF offers full medical, dental and vision benefits, paid vacation, and covers the cost of tuition, books and fees associated with the certificate program. At the end of the program, apprentices have the skills and credentials to be placed in permanent positions with salaries starting at $22 per hour, with annual merit increases and bonuses available. The application for the apprenticeship program will be open until October 29. To apply, visit www.basf.us/apprentice.

“BASF offers many opportunities for career progression within the company, and it is a great company to build your career with. As BASF works toward reaching 30 percent female leadership by 2030, the apprenticeship program will be a key piece to bringing in more diverse talent into the pipeline, and we hope to grow our apprentices into future leaders at BASF,” said White Stone Site Director Deborah McKitten.

The Process Control Technology certificate program at Spartanburg Community College (SCC) trains students to meet the needs of advanced manufacturing-focused work that has grown tremendously over the past decade throughout the Upstate. As part of SCC’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing & Industrial Technologies, the program provides students extensive hands-on training in lab environments, allowing them to continuously practice concepts learned in the classroom. PCT labs feature state-of-the-art equipment and simulations built to emulate the highest production standards and best practices found in the workplace. Graduates leave SCC not only with academic credentials, but first-hand, practical experience that is critical to what they will experience on the job. In addition, PCT certificate graduates may continue their SCC education and pursue an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Process Control Technology, opening the doors to even more employment opportunities, career growth and success.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, apprenticeship programs bring about many benefits, including enhanced employee retention, a safer workplace, a stable and reliable pipeline of qualified workers and a systematic approach to training, which ensures that employees are prepared and certified to produce at the highest skill levels required.

“The ideal candidate for our apprenticeship program is one who has a passion to learn and grow, with the motivation, dedication and drive to succeed,” said Dr. Susan Emmerich, BASF’s NAADP Project Implementation Manager. “No manufacturing experience is necessary to be considered for the program, but an innate curiosity to understand the way things work, desire to work collaboratively, and willingness to learn from experienced technicians are the foundation for success.”

BASF’s White Stone site manufactures surfactants for the personal care and cleaning industries. Materials produced at this site have gone into many products used in the fight against COVID-19, including soaps and disinfectants.

2021 Revitalization Award Goes To Joyner Commercial

(GREENVILLE, SC) — September 30, 2021 — Joyner Commercial, the Commercial Division of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices C. Dan Joyner Realtors®, is pleased to announce that its commercial office at 230 Buist Avenue has been selected to receive the 2021 Commercial Revitalization Award from the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors.

The owner of record, Slate Group Assets, LLC, is owned by the families of Matt Carter and Patrick Szmurlo who are also brokers for the Commercial Division. As owners and occupants of the building, Carter and Szmurlo, wanted to create an open, warm, work atmosphere for their fellow agents. “Danny Joyner basically gave us free reign to make something good happen”, says Carter, the Broker in Charge for the Commercial Division. “We are all thankful our little industrial chic project turned out so nicely.”

The building, built in 1953 for electrical engineering company Huntington & Guerry, had been for sale for many years because sometime after it was built, zoning was put in place in the area, and it was zoned multi-family despite being a textile era office and warehouse. Previous re-zoning attempts and plans to demolish the building or to build multi-story structures had not been well received by the neighborhood. Over the years, the warehouse at the entrance to Buist Avenue from Rutherford had become an eyesore and attractive nuisance.

Fortunately, Carter was able to work with the City to allow the building to be considered grandfathered for office use.

Carter and Szmurlo updated the roof, HVAC, restrooms, parking lot, doors and windows. They replaced warehouse style metal doors with glass roll-ups which are open during nice weather. The original style and construction of the semi-historic structure was embraced and preserved. Tall, plank ceilings remain exposed.

Much of the work was completed while Joyner Commercial occupied the building making it somewhat of a team effort. Grey concrete flooring was colorfully stained to a copper tone by C. Dan

Joyner agent volunteers. Between phone calls, interior columns of concrete brick were hand stained by the office manager to look like clay brick. A textile themed 1,960 sf mural was commissioned for the exterior of the building from John Daso who completed the painting over the summer. Daso’s mural pays homage to Greenville’s textile history and nearby Brutontown Community as well as to the building’s first and only other occupant of the building, Huntington & Guerry. Former employees of the electrical contractor visit regularly to see the changes.

While the updates made were primarily cosmetic, the impact is obvious.

Criteria for the Revitalization Award is based on the potential impact to a particular community through investment of time and money into a property as determined by the GGAR’s Revitalization Committee and a panel of independent judges. Over the past sixteen years, more than 380 applications have been considered.

Other commercial projects considered this year which received high marks were Trehel Corporation’s corporate office at 914 Pendleton Street and Carolina Moves at 455 Congaree Road. The Residential Revitalization 2021 award went to 106 Smythe Street with an honorable mention going to Joshua’s Way, a cooperation between Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County and Homes of Hope. Former recipients of the GGAR Revitalization award include Hampton Station, the Swamp Rabbit Inn, Westone on Stone Avenue, The Lofts at Mills Mill, and others.

About 30 agents work out of the Buist Avenue office, and BHHS C. Dan Joyner has begun upfit renovations on another office near the Haywood Mall with plans to complete by spring of 2022.
