Morris College

In a groundbreaking initiative, several institutions are coming together to provide educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals, aiming to break the cycle of recidivism and empower them with the skills needed for successful reentry into society. Morris College is among the several institutions participating in this initiative.

The South Carolina Coalition for Higher Education in Prison received a $1.4 million grant from Ascendium, a nonprofit organization designed to make education more accessible for people. The grant will be used to expand the prison educational programs for people who are imprisoned.

“Morris College is thrilled to join the South Carolina Coalition for Higher Education in Prison. As a historically black college dedicated to fostering academic excellence, we recognize the transformative power of education, especially for incarcerated individuals.” Dr. Sewell, President of Morris College, said. “We believe that providing access to quality higher educational opportunities can empower individuals, promote rehabilitation, and facilitate successful reintegration into society. Morris is committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those we serve, and we are excited to collaborate with our partners in this important initiative.”

Morris will be partnering with Lee Correctional in Bishopville, S.C. and Turbeville Correctional in Turbeville, S.C. to help incarcerated individuals earn their bachelor’s degrees. They will have the opportunity to earn a degree in Business Administration, Sociology or Religion. They will be able to use Pell Grants and general financial aid to pay for their collegiate journeys.

Morris hopes to begin these classes this fall.

“Together, we will create pathways to success for all South Carolinians, including those who have made mistakes in life,” Sewell said.
