YMCA of Greenville Assistant Aquatics Director Honored with Red Cross Life Saving Award Certificate of Merit

GREENVILLE, S.C. (July 31, 2024) – YMCA of Greenville today announced that Teresa Collins, assistant aquatics program director for the Caine Halter Family YMCA, was honored with the Red Cross Life Saving Award Certificate of Merit, the most prestigious lifesaving award conferred by the Red Cross and is signed by the president of the United States. YMCA and Red Cross officials attended a ceremony held at the Caine Halter Family YMCA to present Collins with the award.

The Certificate of Merit is given to individuals who save or sustain a life using skills learned in a Red Cross Training Services course.

On the night of January 21, 2024, Collins, a trained American Red Cross lifeguard, responded to an accident where two people on an ATV were stopped at an intersection where a 4-wheeler collided with the ATV, flipping it over and ejecting the two people. The 4-wheeler flipped on top of one of the two, causing major injuries including a broken pelvis, broken leg, and severe bleeding from the head. Collins administered first aid and stabilized the person for more than 15 minutes until first responders arrived at the scene. By controlling the bleeding and stabilizing the head and neck, Collins’ actions were crucial to the well-being of the person.

“Lifesavers like Teresa exemplify the mission of the Red Cross to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies,” said Jamie Raichel, executive director for the Upstate Chapter of the American Red Cross of South Carolina. “We are extremely proud to present this award and commend Teresa for her willingness to help others in distress.”

“We are extremely proud of Teresa’s actions, and we are very lucky that she is a part of our family here at the YMCA of Greenville,” said Brian Vest, vice president of operations, Caine Halter Family YMCA. “Teresa is a prime example of living out the mission of the YMCA of Greenville, building healthy spirit, mind and body for all.”

Greenville Convention Center

GREENVILLE, SC (July 30, 2024) – Greenville Convention Center and Rotary Club of Greenville today announced the partnership of their respective signature events at a joint press conference. The Greenville Convention Center’s annual Holiday Fair and the Rotary Club’s annual Kringle Holiday Village, to be called Holiday Fair & Kringle Village, will unite to delight locals and draw visitors to the Upstate for three days of holiday fun December 5-7, 2024 at the Greenville Convention Center.

For more than 54 years, Greenville Convention Center’s Holiday Fair has offered the region’s largest selection of holiday arts, crafts and gifts under one roof. Exhibitors include approximately 350 crafters and commercial vendors in the three-day, award-winning fair that gives shoppers a chance to support small businesses during the holiday season, while also providing an opportunity to give back to the community.

For more than 50 years, the Rotary Club of Greenville has raised millions of dollars to support Rotary charities through holiday events, including the Singing Christmas Tree and the Roper Mountain Holiday Lights. In 2021, Rotarians created Kringle Holiday Village at Fluor Field to bring a European inspired festival to the Upstate.

Holiday Fair & Kringle Village will allow shoppers who have made Greenville Convention Center’s annual Holiday Fair a tradition, experience additional festivities and holiday happenings, while prior attendees of Kringle Holiday Village will be introduced to more than 350 vendors to do their holiday shopping.

“Combining our annual Holiday Fair and the Rotary Club’s Kringle Holiday Village is a big win for our community,” said Matt Holander, general manager, Greenville Convention Center. “Working together, our two organizations will create a true holiday extravaganza for thousands of local and out of town visitors alike that will build on the traditions of the past while offering new elements that create memories for the future.”

“With inspiration from the Rotary Club of Greenville, sponsors and volunteers along with the resources and team at the Greenville Convention Center, Holiday Fair & Kringle Village will celebrate the merriment of the season,” said Jane Dyer, event co-chair, Holiday Fair & Kringle Village. “It brings joy to thousands of people and raises money for our Rotary charities. We give a gift to the community and the community gives back.”

GREENVILLE –Affordable Upstate is bringing new life to two apartment complexes along the West Parker Road corridor.

The affordable housing focused real estate company has purchased a two-story building at 100 Lily Street that has 14 units, and an L-shaped, two-story structure that has 24 at 2001 West Parker Road. The complexes backup to each other, and the goal is to make them one complex known as Vista West III.

“Since 2021, Affordable Upstate has focused heavily on the Berea area,” said Mario Brown, a principal and co-founder of Affordable Upstate. “Preserving housing in the Berea submarket as Greenville grows is a strategic move that ensures that affordable housing options will continue while values and demand increase in the surrounding area.”

This is the company’s third acquisition on Lily Street and gives them a significant competitive advantage, with the entire Vista West portfolio on Lily Street and West Parker Road being 160 units.

Affordable Upstate has partnered with Southeast Affordable Housing Administration (SAHA), a non-profit organization that partners and educates third-party
for profit owners on affordable housing incentives, to subsidize the
relocation of residents to nearby Affordable Upstate assets as Vista West
III is refurbished. SAHA is providing moving expenses as well as subsidizing
the rents of the existing residents.

“This is about redefining affordable housing in our community. We believe communities of pride are communities
of opportunity. ” Brown said.

In addition, Affordable Upstate will work with Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing Property Management (NOAH), which
is an economically mobility-driven property management company, to help place
resident’s economic health at heart of the project. The organization does
things such as report all positive payments by residents to credit bureaus thus
increasing their credit score. It also offers a deposit alternative that gives
owners more coverage than a traditional deposit and allows residents, often
credit challenged, from having to come up with first and last month’s rent.

“We operate at the intersection of profit and purpose,” said Brown, Affordable Upstate’s co-founder and principal. “With the assistance of SAHA and NOAH’s economically empowering property management practices, our resident relocation strategy exemplifies good neighborliness and reduces. It reduces development costs by concentrating efforts within a strict time frame. This efficient approach allows us to deliver substantial returns to our impact investors while charging below market rent to future residents of Vista West III, demonstrating that community support and financial success can go hand in hand.”

About Affordable Upstate:

home now embodies modern luxury, harmoniously integrated into the serene lakeside setting.
