Benedicte Axboe has been promoted to TalentRiseGVL Director. Since joining the Chamber in March 2023 as a Career Navigator, Benedicte has played a key role in launching and growing TalentRiseGVL. This program helps working-age adults achieve post-secondary educational attainment. In 2024 alone, TalentRiseGVL engaged 164 participants, assisted 56 individuals in enrolling in programs and saw 12 earn a certification or credential. In her new role, Benedicte will lead the team and set the strategic direction for the program’s continued growth and impact.

Garland Crowley has been hired as a TalentRiseGVL Career Navigator. In this role, Garland will work directly with individuals to support their educational attainment goals, helping them access the resources needed to advance their careers.

Dorien Dickey has joined the Greenville Chamber as LaunchGVL Director. LaunchGVL, a partnership between the Chamber and Greenville County Schools, connects high school juniors and seniors with paid, work-based learning opportunities. Dorien experience in staffing and internship development will support his efforts to partner with area organizations to expand the program’s reach.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — “Waiting for You,” a new musical comedy created by two Upstate music and entertainment industry legends is premiering Friday, April 11 with a limited engagement at the Chapman Cultural Center.

Waiting for You” is set in Heaven, where men aren’t allowed. Two show up, and all hilarity breaks loose.

Colorful characters in the nine-member cast include Saints Mattie and Joanie; Dr. Jessie Christie; and Susie, who dies within minutes of the opening and is eager to enjoy her rewards in the Afterlife. She discovers Eternity isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The musical is the brainchild of John Jeter and David Berry.

Berry is a 37-year composition professor at Converse University. He wrote the music and co-wrote lyrics. In addition, Berry toured for 13 years with Anthem, his rock band whose members included Ralph and Marty, a beloved duo that performed for years around Greenville. Jeter wrote the book and lyrics. He is best known as co-owner of The Handlebar, the storied Greenville live-music venue that he chronicled in his book, “Rockin’ A Hard Place.” He now teaches music business at Converse and USC Upstate.

Kimilee Bryant, the Upstate artist renowned for her leading roles on Broadway, is the featured performer. Most notably, she starred as “Christine” in “The Phantom of the Opera” — Broadway’s longest-running show — she is the only actor to have played the two other major female roles. She also appeared in Phantom’s U.S. Tour, in Toronto and Switzerland, and has performed in numerous other New York City musical and operatic productions, among myriad marquee accomplishments.

Director Michelle Newman brings a wealth of experience and expertise with a resume that boasts nearly 200 stage productions, and her continued work with numerous off-Broadway actors.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Housing Authority (TGHA) was honored this week by USC Upstate with the Greenville Campus Community Engagement in Education Activity of the Year Award.

The award was bestowed on the TGHA for its role in a ten-year project designed to support HUD’s Moving to Work (MTW) program, an initiative that assists families with needs-based public housing vouchers to gain greater social mobility and be able to move out of the public housing system.

As a partner to TGHA, USC Upstate assists with program outcome tracking so that effectiveness and progress of the program can be effectively measured.

“The program provides support for job training, education, and other needs to help participants set attainable goals and work toward them with support,” said Dr. Michelle Covington, Executive Director of Greenville Programs and Professor of Criminal Justice at USC Upstate.

The partnership includes a TGHA paid research assistantship for one USC Upstate student year-round for three years. The first student assistant selected was Kaylee Basto, a soon-to-be graduate of the Criminal Justice bachelors program and incoming Criminal Justice masters student, who is passionate about serving low-income families and encouraging social mobility.

“The partnership between USC Upstate and The Greenville Housing Authority (TGHA) is one of great importance,” said Terril Bates, the agency’s CEO. “The MTW program designed by TGHA is a sea change in the delivery of housing subsidies. Its success will positively impact the availability of rental assistance to households in Greenville.”

It is part of a dynamic community that serves more than 3,000 households including veterans, elderly and disabled households. TGHA issues payments of $30 million to private property owners annually.
