Upstate Mediation Center

Greenville, SC – The Upstate Mediation Center (“UMC”), is pleased to announce Mr. Surendra Jain as the recipient of UMC’s 2025 Peacemaker Award. Each year the Peacemaker Award recognizes a member of the community who has made a significant difference in promoting tolerance, building good will and understanding, resolving conflict, and striving for peace. The UMC Board of Directors believe Mr. Jain’s leadership exemplifies these attributes.

Widely known as someone who does not just speak about peace but lives it; Mr. Jain brings his values into every aspect of his life. He takes action wherever he sees opportunities to promote peace.

Among his many contributions, Mr. Jain founded the Rotary Club of Greenville’s Peace and Conflict Resolution Conferences, held in 2016, 2019, and 2022. These events gathered hundreds of students, leaders, and community members to explore interfaith understanding, forgiveness, and bias, with keynote speakers like Bawa Jain and Azim Khamisa. He has also championed conflict resolution education in schools.

Most recently, Mr. Jain conceived the idea for a Peace Park within Unity Park—now the Ahimsa Garden of Peace—and is helping to lead the project’s development. In recognition of his impact, he was recently awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor.

“Mr. Jain’s lifelong commitment to peace and his tireless efforts to unite people across lines of difference have left a profound mark on our community,” said Jennifer Olmert, Executive Director of the UMC. “He not only promotes peace in principle but puts it into action in ways that are lasting, inclusive, and deeply inspiring.”

Mr. Jain’s name will be added to a plaque recognizing past Peacemakers at the Peacemaker Bench in Cleveland Park. The Peacemaker Bench was commissioned in 2019 by UMC and created by Greenville artisan blacksmith Ryan Calloway.

The 2025 Peacemaker Celebration will be held on Thursday, October 16th at Endeavor.

Verdae appoints Beau Welling to its board

GREENVILLE, SC — Verdae Development, Inc. (VDI), the master developer for the 1,100-acre master planned community known as Verdae, has appointed Beau Welling to its board of directors.

“Beau is a world-class golf course designer and land planner. His approach to creating physical environments is unique in that he understands that building great places means delivering value to the human experience,” said Bogue Wallin, chairman of the board for VDI. “We’re also honored by the fact that Beau will carry on his grandfather, the late Buck Welling’s, legacy of service at Verdae.”

Welling maintains an incredible passion and fervor for intellectual and creative pursuits, which can be evidenced in his diverse background. Welling earned a degree in physics from Brown University, where he was a member of the Brown University Bears golf team. Having a keen interest in golf course design, he also studied landscape architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design while also being afforded the opportunity to visit and play many “Golden Age” golf courses in the Northeast. He later attended Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland as a visiting scholar where he was exposed to links golf for the first time. Ultimately, he returned home to earn a master’s degree in international business from the University of South Carolina.

Having begun his career as an investment banker, Welling was coaxed away from the world of finance by Tom Fazio, who initiated him into the world of golf. Assisting Fazio for more than a decade, he oversaw the design and completion of over 90 new and renovated golf courses; led the firm’s overall management and growth; and guided his considerable charitable endeavors.

TGHA to transform how affordable housing works with new Moving to Work program

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Housing Authority is launching a program that will write the next chapter in their affordable housing programs in our community.

The Greenville Housing Authority (TGHA) announced it had received final approval from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a Moving to Work (MTW) program. This is a federal demonstration program that gives the TGHA more flexibility to design and test innovative strategies for providing housing assistance.

“The goal is to promote self-sufficiency among low-income families, reduce administrative costs, and increase housing choices,” said Denise Cleveland-Leggett, a Regional HUD Director.

The TGHA used private funds to test an MTW program for the past nine months. HUD does not provide additional funding for the program, rather it permits flexibilities in the funding allocated to the housing choice voucher program. HUD also provides an opportunity for the housing authority to submit regulatory waivers.

Under the new TGHA MTW program, the focus will be on preparing participants for opportunities through education and employment opportunities for those receiving assistance from the housing agency, said Terril Bates, the TGHA’s Chief Executive Officer. The goal is to help people to increase their household earnings so that they are ultimately comfortably able to compete in the rental market.

This creates a two-outcome effect of helping to reduce the massive backlog of people seeking housing assistance by empowering eligible participants to graduate from the housing choice voucher rental assistance program. There are currently 1,700 households in TGHA’s housing choice voucher program that will be required to participate in the mandatory MTW program. Participant names will be placed in a randomizer to determine who is contacted in what order. The elderly and disabled are exempt from participation.

Upstate Nonprofit Servants for Sight Launches New Mobile Eye Care Unit

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Servants for Sight, an Upstate nonprofit providing free and low-cost, high-quality eye care for community members living in poverty, launched its new mobile vision unit in January. Part of the nonprofit’s signature health outreach program, the state-of-the-art van brings a full vision care suite to patients who might lack the funds or transportation to see an ophthalmologist or optometrist. It can serve up to 33 patients per day with eyecare appointments—instead of just an eye screening with the organization’s previous unit —with the goal to serve one to two locations every week. Since launching in January, the “Vision Van” has facilitated 22 free screening events in Taylors, Spartanburg, Greenville, Clinton and Easley, serving more than 400 people.

The new mobile unit was made possible in part by the generous support of Eastside High School’s 2023 Eastside Spirit Week, where students raised an astounding $142,748.26.

Servants for Sight partners with Upstate organizations to bring the mobile unit to shelters, free medical clinics, food pantries and various assistance groups where patients are already receiving other services. During free vision screening events, patients have their vision checked, are screened for eye conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma and dry eye, receive free reading glasses when needed, and learn more about how to care for their eyes. Qualifying patients with more advanced eye care needs are also connected to highly qualified medical providers who will then donate their time and expertise to provide free services, including eye surgery.

To find a full list of the scheduled mobile unit locations for the remainder of the year, or to learn how to donate or volunteer with Servants for Sight, please visit servantsforsight.org.
