Lander University

GREENWOOD, S.C.—Shae Baldwin didn’t just graduate from Lander University in December 2025 — she left an indelible mark on the institution’s academic legacy.

Recognized with the Thayer Award, the University’s highest academic honor, Baldwin has been recognized not only for her exceptional scholarship, but for the intellectual curiosity, discipline and dedication that defined her journey and set her apart as one of Lander’s most accomplished graduates.

The Thayer Award is bestowed each semester upon the graduating student with the highest grade point average (GPA).

For Baldwin, of Mount Pleasant, the award is significant given the demands she balanced along the way. In addition to excelling in Lander’s rigorous nursing program, she was a dedicated member of the Lander women’s soccer team, successfully navigating two of the University’s most demanding arenas — academics and athletics — at the highest level.

“Receiving the Thayer Award is such a blessing. I have spent the past three-and-a-half-years pouring my heart into Lander University, and to be recognized for my work ethic and dedication is incredibly meaningful,” said Baldwin, who earned academic honors at Lander from the Honors College and now is working at MUSC’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston as a nurse in the pediatric heart center.

When she received the congratulatory call about the award from Dr. Holisa Wharton, dean of the College of Nursing, Human Performance and Health Sciences, Baldwin said, “I was completely shocked and beyond grateful. This award represents the hard work, discipline and determination it has taken to become the best student and future nurse I can be. I am so thankful for Lander University and the opportunities it has given me.”

Daniel Rumfelt for Greenville County Council

After long thought and many conversations with his closest friends and family, Daniel Rumfelt has announced his decision to run for Greenville County Council
“It was not an easy decision, but one that needed to be made,” Rumfelt said. “South Greenville deserves a different path forward—a different direction, both from a development and business standpoint.”
Rumfelt emphasized the need to balance growth with the protection of rural areas and private property. “We are a growing county, and that growth must be managed responsibly. Smart development is possible with what we have; it just hasn’t started yet.”
Public safety is a central focus of Rumfelt’s campaign. He highlighted law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel as the county’s greatest asset, stressing the need for strong support, competitive resources, and public recognition for first responders.
“As a lifelong conservative Republican, I believe government works best when it is proactive, not reactive,” Rumfelt said. He pointed to the need for a comprehensive review of county ordinances, including updating or removing outdated codes, and the importance of establishing a dedicated revenue source to address Greenville County’s growing infrastructure demands.
Rumfelt also noted that Greenville County’s status as one of South Carolina’s top destinations means infrastructure costs should not fall solely on local property owners. “Our community deserves a fair approach that protects residents while supporting responsible economic growth,” he said.
Positioning himself as an advocate for South Greenville, Rumfelt pledged to challenge county overreach and promote local, community-focused solutions. Over the coming months, he plans to roll out policy ideas aimed at improving quality of life across the district.
“I’ve been blessed with the support of my family, friends, and neighbors along this journey,” Rumfelt said. “I’m asking for your support, your prayers, and your help as we work toward Election Day on June 9.”

Barbara Stone Foundation

Greenville County Schools, in partnership with The Barbara Stone Foundation, is hosting a resource fair, “The Road to Possibilities – An Opportunity Fair!” on Thursday, February 5th, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. for students with disabilities ages 3-21, their families, and district special education staff. The free event is also open to the public and will be held at the University Center at 225 S. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville.

Exhibitors will provide information on community resources and services to assist students and families while in school as well as when they begin to plan for navigating the road to an inclusive future after high school. Resources will include information on post-secondary education and training, employment opportunities, recreation and leisure pursuits, independent living, financial literacy, legal planning, etc.

“We had such a positive response from our first Road to Possibilities – An Opportunity Fair that we knew this needed to happen every year,” said Carlene Zierfuss, Transition Coordinator, Greenville County Schools. “When students with disabilities graduate from high school and enter adulthood, the daily supports that they have known and had for their entire educational journey end. We hope to make that journey and transition seamless, so our students have more opportunities and support after they leave Greenville County Schools.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Greenville County Schools again to host Road to Possibilities – An Opportunity Fair and highlight the wonderful resources available in our community,” said Lara Ceisel, Executive Director, Barbara Stone Foundation. “Navigating resources and options after high school can be hard for many, and we hope to make new connections and provide options that make their journey a little easier.”
