New Twist on Traditional Holiday Classic Making Greenville Debut at Upcountry History Museum

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, the doors of the Upcountry History Museum will open to an ever-familiar story but the Greenville debut of an exclusive holiday favorite, “Nutcracker: The Exhibition.”

While the toy soldiers march and the sugar plum fairy dances during traditional Christmas performances of “The Nutcracker” ballet this season, there is much more to the story – a chronicle that originated as a short story by German writer E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816 and was followed by the setting of the story to music as a ballet in 1892 by renowned Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Organized by the Upcountry History Museum, this extraordinary holiday exhibition will showcase original costumes from Walt Disney’s 2018 live-action film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” as well as props, ballet costumes, original illustrations and drawings from partnerships with Walt Disney Archives, The Walt Disney Family Museum, The Charles M. Schulz Museum, acclaimed children’s author/illustrator James Ransome, and Greenville’s own Carolina Ballet Theatre. In addition, the exhibition will explore the unique connection between Disney’s 1940’s animated classic, “Fantasia,” and Tchaikovsky’s musical sequence in the ballet’s “Nutcracker Suite” as it presents what animation historian John Canemaker calls “one of the most exquisite examples of Disney fantasy ever created.”

On display through February 19, 2023, “Nutcracker: The Exhibition” will take visitors on a journey of discovery through which they can explore a kaleidoscope of artistic re-imaginings of the classic tale from the 1820s to the present. It will showcase the cultural and technological shifts that have compelled filmmakers, artists, and fans to return to the tale of “The Nutcracker” time and time again.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 864-467-3100 or visit www.upcountryhistory.org.

WITCH USHERS IN ANOTHER FRESH BREAK FROM TYPICAL HOLIDAY FARE

WITCH USHERS IN ANOTHER FRESH BREAK FROM TYPICAL HOLIDAY FARE

The Warehouse Theatre Produces a Smart, Dark Comedy Sure to Cast a Spell on Your Soul This Season

GREENVILLE, SC: When WITCH first arrived, the Chicago Sun Times said, “Jen Silverman’s exceedingly smart new comedy casts an intoxicating spell. The playwright’s ear for patterns of speech, and the halting language of longing, is marvelous here.”

It only makes sense that The Warehouse Theatre would not only produce such a play but produce it right in the middle of the holiday season, continuing their recent tradition of focusing on compelling stories laced with humor at every moment of the year.

In the darkly humorous tale, the devil arrives in the village of Edmonton to bargain for the souls of its residents in exchange for their strongest desires. The town outcast, Elizabeth, should be his easiest target having been labeled a “witch,” but she’s not easily bought. As the devil returns to convince her again and again – the village is forever changed. An inventive retelling of a Jacobean drama (think of a combination between Warehouse’s recent fresh take on THE CRUCIBLE mixed with the playfulness of 2019 hit PRIDE & PREJUDICE) this wickedly sharp fable
asks how much our souls are worth when hope is hard to find.

The cast and production team features artists that are well known to Warehouse audiences with performers Guillermo Jemmott, Liam MacDougall, Kerrie Seymour, Maddie Tisdel, Jayce T. Tromsness and Austin Wilson. WITCH also features the design talents of Kristina White (scenic), Margaret Caterisano (costumes), Alicia Varcoe (lighting), Kevin Frazier (sound), Beth Martin (props) and Bill Muñoz (fight choreography).

Jay Briggs returns as director adding to his long string of successes at The Warehouse Theatre including CLYBOURNE PARK, PRIDE & PREJUDICE, APPROPRIATE, and the world premiere digital production of FIRE IN THE GARDEN.

I Pay What I Can Sunday is December 4th at 3:00pm with tickets being sold on a first come, first serve basis starting at 2:15pm. Blue Star Theatre discounts for veterans and active military apply throughout the run. The show runs December 2nd through December 18th, 2022.

About The Warehouse Theatre
The Warehouse Theatre is Upstate South Carolina’s premier, professional theatre where community engagement and education complement thought-provoking theatre experiences. The Warehouse Theatre is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. More information

SYMPHONY PRESENTS THE RETURN OF VIOLINIST YEVGENY KUTIK IN MASTERWORKS CONCERT TCHAIKOVSKY’S “PATHETIQUE” SYMPHONY

GREENVILLE, SC – Greenville Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel, will present its second Masterworks Concert of the 75th Anniversary Season, Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique” Symphony featuring Violinist Yevgeny Kutik, on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 13, 2022, at 3 pm in Peace Concert Hall.

The Masterworks concert begins with Mozart’s Violin Concert No.5 (“Turkish”), featuring violinist Yevgeny Kutik. In addition to being a celebrated pianist, the teenage Mozart was a gifted violinist. The 19-year-old Mozart was more interested in composing, and the Fifth Violin Concerto is perhaps the most popular of his five violin concertos. Its subtitle comes from a driving theme in the third movement that would have sounded Turkish to Mozart’s audience.

Soloist Yevgeny Kutik has captivated audiences worldwide with an old-world sound that communicates a modern intellect. Praised for his technical precision and virtuosity, he is also lauded for his poetic and imaginative interpretations of both standard works and newly composed repertoire. Kutik holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a master’s degree from the New England Conservatory and currently resides in Boston. His violin was crafted in Italy in 1915 by Stefano Scarampella. Kutik last performed with the Greenville Symphony in 2014, and “Exerted a dazzling command of the soloist’s role… Kutik rolled off the soaring melodies in rhapsodic style. Above all, Kutik’s performance was passionate. With lightning-fast arpeggios, stretches of ‘dialogue’ in which Kutik created both ‘speakers,’ and ravishing slow violin melodies, Kutik offered the audience an electrifying performance.” – The Greenville News (SC)

In the second half of the concert, the Symphony will perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 (“Pathetique”). Tchaikovsky believed his Sixth Symphony to be his greatest achievement. Tchaikovsky wrote, “I myself absolutely believe it to be the best and especially the most sincere of all my works. I love it as I have never loved any single one of my other creations.” He also wrote, “Without exaggeration, I have put my whole soul into this work.”

Tickets to the Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique” Symphony concert range from $20-$75, with special day of performance rates of $5 for students and $10 for teachers with ID. To purchase tickets, visit the Peace Center box office at the corner of Broad and Main Streets in downtown Greenville, or call (864) 467-3000 between 9:30 am – 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.

THE GREENVILLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is celebrating its 75th Anniversary during the 2022-2023 season. Recognized as one of the finest professional orchestras in the southeastern U.S., it began as a small group of volunteer musicians performing in the Women’s Auditorium on the old Furman College campus. Since 1990 the GSO’s home has been The Peace Center in Greenville SC. The orchestra performs the classical repertoire in Masterworks and Chamber Series concerts and an Artists Up Close Series featuring smaller ensembles. In addition, they perform three Pops concerts annually. The GSO has been led by Music Director and Conductor Edvard Tchivzhel since 1999. The Russian-born Tchivzhel is the Symphony’s 5th Music Director. Through its Education and Community Outreach concerts and programs, the Greenville Symphony annually reaches more than 50,000 children and adults in the Upstate. greenvillesymphony.org
