Joseph Bradley, a nationally recognized artist known for his captivating, nature-inspired art, is set to launch his latest venture, Spoonbill Gallery, in the heart of Greenville, South Carolina’s Art District. Bradley’s artistry has captivated audiences nationally, and his new gallery is poised to be a haven for art lovers, both seasoned and new. Under Kristina White’s leadership, Spoonbill Gallery will showcase a diverse and carefully curated selection of contemporary and emerging artists from across the nation.

White, who recently moved from New Orleans, embarked on her journey in set design for prominent film productions, television, and theater. Her portfolio includes contributions to movies such as Anchorman II plus serving as a scenic painter for Vampire Diaries. In addition, White has provided her creative expertise locally in Greenville to organizations such as The Children’s Theatre and The Warehouse Theatre.

The gallery’s name, Spoonbill, embodies Southern charm, beauty, and a bit of quirk. Just as a spoonbill gracefully wades through the water, Greenville’s newest art gallery elegantly explores a myriad of mediums, themes, and emotions. Visitors can anticipate being transported into a realm of creativity, where each piece weaves its distinct narrative. The energy and vibrancy experienced in the space is authentic, contagious, and intentionally welcoming.

The grand opening of Spoonbill Gallery will take place April 19th from 6-9pm, at 1292 Pendleton Street in the Village of West Greenville. The event promises to be a celebration of art, culture, and creativity, featuring live music, refreshments, and opportunities to interact with the gallery’s featured artists. Artists on view at Spoonbill include Bess Whittington, Anna Kincaide, Amanda Bennett, Annie Flynn, Michelle Radford, Amy Shekhter, and Melissa Schmidt, to name a few.

Strides for GAPS Walk coming this month to Upstate

GREENVILLE, S.C. — April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month and the Greenville Area Parkinson Society (GAPS) is raising awareness for those in South Carolina living with Parkinson’s Disease with its Strides for GAPS Walk April 21

The Strides for GAPS Walk presented by Stan and Roz Smith is happening Sunday, April 21 from 12-2 p.m. at the Conestee Park Pavilion, 840 Mauldin Road. Register for the walk as an individual or as a team here.

The event features a 0.4-mile-walk around Conestee Park, food, music, local vendors who serve the community, and activities for children. Strides for GAPS is the organization’s largest fundraiser providing the Upstate community the opportunity to celebrate people living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) while raising vital funds to further the GAPS mission.

The Greenville Area Parkinson Society is a non-profit organization, which offers support, education, and advocacy to people living with PD, their care partners, spouses, and families. Since its inception, GAPS has served thousands of people in the area through activity-based programs, support groups, expert speaker seminars, social events, and collaboration with the medical community.

“Nearly 90,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with PD each year,” said Shannon Spurrier, Executive Director of GAPS. “Raising awareness about this disease is so important, and we hope everyone who comes out to participate learns more about our mission.”

Furman University Master of Arts in Strategic Design students win local student American Advertising Awards

Greenville, SC (April 2, 2024) – Students from Furman University’s Master of Arts in Strategic Design (MASD) program were recognized with one Gold ADDY and six Silver ADDYs at AAF Greenville’s 2024 American Advertising Awards Gala.

The event, which took place on March 9, 2024, in Greenville, SC, recognizes and rewards creative excellence in the art of advertising. Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local American Advertising Awards Student Division is the first of a three-tier, national competition that represents the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising and cultivates the highest creative standards in the industry.

Second-year student Fiona Newell of Clemson, SC, received the program’s one Gold ADDY for a poster she created for “The Pretty Ugly Pink Tax” and two Silver ADDYs. Newell’s Gold ADDY-winning entry will move on to compete at the district level, which includes students in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. District ADDY winners are then forwarded to the third tier, the national stage of the American Advertising Awards.

“Fiona’s work showcases what it truly means to be a MASD student. We are proud of not only her accomplishments but all the accomplishments of our students,” said MASD program director Marta Lanier. “Participating in the American Advertising Awards competition offers our design students a valuable opportunity to gain recognition within the industry, and establish a competitive edge in their careers by demonstrating their ability to produce innovative and impactful design work.”

Harper General Contractors adopts school as community service project

PICKENS, S.C. — A more than 100-year-old one-room school building that served as the only education outlet for Black children in the Liberia Community of northern Pickens County will soon be renovated as part of a larger plan to establish the once thriving community as an historic stop just off Scenic Highway 11.

The Soapstone Preservation Endowment (the Endowment), a public charity created for the sole purpose of protecting and promoting the history and story of the Liberia Community and Soapstone Baptist Church, has reached a historic agreement with Greenville-based Harper General Contractors to “adopt” the former Soapstone School as its latest community service project, said Carlton Owen, the Endowment’s Chairman.

“When we launched the Endowment in 2022 with the audacious goal of amassing a $500,000 perpetual endowment by December 2025, we envisioned the school as our first project,” Owen said. “With the generous help of Harper General Contractors and their cadre of partners, we know that this will be a success.”

This is the first step by the nonprofit to formally establish the entire site as a historic stop that will be included on a Black History Trail in the Upstate, he said. The story of Soapstone has spread throughout the region because of the efforts of Mable Owens Clarke, the sixth-generation steward and matriarch of the church. In 1999, her mother, Lula Mae, made her promise never to let the historically Black church close. As part of her mission, Clarke began doing monthly fish fries for the community for the next 22 years.

The Soapstone School traces its history to children taking classes in the 1870s on the rock that gives the church and schools its name. The school then moved inside the church before the school building was erected in the 1920s for students in first through sixth grades.

A one-room building with unpainted walls and double seats for students who carried pails filled with water from a nearby stream every day at 11 a.m. so their teacher could make a “Type B ” lunch of pinto beans, turnip greens, black beans and cornbread, it served the community until it was closed as part of consolidation efforts in 1953.

Harper and the Endowment will hold their work day on Saturday, May 4, said Doug Harper, the company’s chairman. The company is well known for its community efforts over the years. It earned the Community Foundation of Greenville’s 2022 Philanthropic Spirit Award, which recognizes an organization that serves the community through exceptional partnerships with nonprofits and by providing vital programming.

“We have known about the history of the Liberia Community and Soapstone Church for many years and have been inspired by community matriarch Mable Owens Clarke’s efforts to sustain the site via monthly fish fries that she hosted for more than two decades,” he said. “When we learned of the Endowment’s plans to rehab the school we jumped at the chance to be a part of helping protect and promote this important legacy.”

Once the building is stabilized and rehabilitated, period furnishings will be sought so that area residents, students, and tourists can experience a bit of what the education system was like for Black children until mandatory school consolidation.

The Endowment has already achieved 40% of its financial goal and has established “The Partnership Challenge” seeking at least one hundred businesses, churches, or individuals/families who provide a one-time $3,000 or greater tax-deductible gift or $1,000 per year over three years in support of the Endowment’s mission.

Phillip Phillips to Perform Live in Spartanburg at Free Concert Celebration

(Spartanburg, S.C.) – March 26, 2024 – The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX tournament officials are pleased to announce that American musician and singer-songwriter, Phillip Phillips, will headline this year’s downtown Spartanburg Concert. Presented by The Johnson Group, the concert will take place on Thursday, June 6th, at Morgan Square with free admission to the public. The evening’s festivities will kick off at 5:00 pm, culminating in Phillip Phillips’ performance later in the evening.

Phillip Phillips, the American Idol winner known for his soulful music and engaging performances, will provide an evening of musical excellence for concertgoers in Spartanburg. Renowned for his chart-topping hits like “Home,” “Gone, Gone, Gone,” and “Raging Fire,” Phillips has toured with artists such as John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw, as well as performed alongside Bruce Springsteen.

Geordy Johnson, CEO of The Johnson Group, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with the BMW Charity Pro-Am and sponsor the Phillip Phillips concert. This year marks the 3rd year of the downtown Spartanburg concert series, following successful performances in previous years by Diamond Rio and Marshall Tucker Band.
